Resilient Modulus Test System

Geocomp’s LoadTrac II Resilient Modulus unit fully automates resilient modulus tests on base/subbase/subgrade materials. The LoadTrac II meets or exceeds all specifications for Resilient Modulus Testing of Base/Subbase/Subgrade Materials by AASHTO T 294/T 307, SHRP Protocol P46, and NCHRP RPT 285. It generates a complete final test report with graphs and table values as well as constitutive realtionships based on publication No. FHWA-RD-97-083. It minimizes man time during testing and offers a versatile platform for performing additional geotechnical tests.

Resilient modulus is a complicated test in which the stiffness of the sample changes with loading. Since the performance of cyclic loading systems depends on the stiffness of the sample, most systems fail to apply the correct load throughout the test. Geocomp’s RM system uses a very sophisticated adaptive control that makes real-time adjustment of a PID controller to adjust the system control parameters as the stiffness of the specimen changes. This feature permits our system to apply an accurate load from the beginning to the end of the test.

Description

The resilient modulus test method measures total resilient (recoverable) axial deformation response of subgrade soils or base/subbase materials. It provides a means of characterizing pavement construction materials under a variety of conditions (ie. moisture, density) and stress states that simulate the conditions in a pavement subjected to moving wheel loads (cars, trucks, etc.). A repeated axial cyclic stress of fixed magnitude (Haversine), load duration, and cycle duration is applied to a cylindrical test specimen while a static-confining stress is provided by means of a triaxial pressure chamber. Specific loading sequences are used based on material type.

The Resilient Modulus test is the modern preferred testing method and data for roadway and pavement design over previous methods such as California Bearing Ratio (CBR) and R-value.

Frequently Asked Questions

The LoadTrac II is a versatile load frame that can easily be upgraded to perform additional test types by purchasing required software and accessories.  Incremental Consolidation, Swell, Unconfined Compression, and California Bearing Ratio are popular tests performed on the load frame alone. Constant Rate Consolidation is an option with the addition of one FlowTrac pressure & volume control flow pump. Triaxial (UU, CU, CD) and Stress Path testing is possible with one to two FlowTrac flow pumps. For those interested in cyclic/dynamic testing, addition of a Cyclic/RM controller and hardware allows for Resilient Modulus testing, and then combined with a FlowTrac allows for Cyclic Triaxial testing.
