The Challenge

  • NYSTA sought continuous monitoring system
  • $3.98 billion project: largest NY bridge project

The bridge owner, New York State Thruway Authority (NYSTA), sought an innovative system that would perform continuous monitoring of physical and environmental parameters and would be equipped with functionality to identify changes in the bridge response. The $3.98 billion project is the largest bridge project in New York history and such a system would provide critical insights and actionable data for maximizing the life of the structure.

The Solution

Geocomp’s experts designed, installed, and commissioned what is widely understood to be the most sophisticated Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) system in the United States. To provide the most efficient process, all instruments were procured through Geocomp who then integrated the entire system with a customized, state-of-the-art software platform (iSiteCentral®). The system allows for both monitoring and evaluation of the bridge:

  • Monitoring is provided through real-time data collection from approximately 1,000 sensors measuring the bridge response to load and environmental effects. The majority of the data acquisition systems were built by Geocomp with elements synchronized to within 3 milliseconds.
  • Evaluation is provided by reporting of the current load and health conditions through Geocomp’s fast, secure, and scalable iSiteCentral® software platform. The key performance metrics are quickly viewed through a secure dashboard with detailed bridge schematic: effects of temperature on bridge performance, seismic activity, ship impact, wind response, vibration analysis, and displacements of expansion joints and piers.
