The Challenge

  • Determine onsite rock depth which was critical for the length of drilled shaft foundation

The project is a bridge replacement over a freight railway in Albany, NY. The client wanted to determine the depth of rock onsite as it was critical information for the length of the drilled shaft foundation.

The Solution

Geocomp was hired to provide site investigation for the drilled shaft foundation design. As part of the scope, our team performed an S-scan geophysical survey to support determination of the depth of rock using the following configuration:

  • S-scan survey of 300 ft long array for only a few hours of data collection and was able to capture data up to 500 ft deep
  • S-scan results were corroborated with nearby boring data. The client then used this data to evaluate the feasibility of the length of the drilled shaft design
  • Initial results of shear wave velocity versus depth up to 200 ft were consistent. S-scan results suggested the subsurface was a uniform soil
