Standard Method of Test for Direct Shear Test of Soils Under Consolidated Drained Conditions

Test Method Title

Standard Method of Test for Direct Shear Test of Soils Under Consolidated Drained Conditions

Reference Number

AASHTO T 236

Material

Soil

Test Property

Shear Strength, Mohr's strength envelope

Description of Test

This test method consists of placing the test specimen in the direct shear device, applying a predetermined normal stress, providing for wetting or draining of the test specimen, or both, consolidating the specimen under the normal stress, unlocking the frames that hold the test specimen, and displacing one frame horizontally with respect to the other at a constant rate of shearing deformation and measuring the shearing force and horizontal displacements as the specimen is sheared.

Number of Test Specimens

3

Test Specimen Size

2.5 in diameter x 1 in in height (fine- grained) or 12 in x 12 in x 6 in (if coarse-grained)

Keywords

Compacted specimens, consolidated, direct-shear test, drained test conditions, Mohr strength envelope, shear strength, undisturbed
