Test Method Title

Standard Practices for Preparing Rock Core Specimens and Determining Dimensional and Shape Tolerances

Reference Number

ASTM D4543

Material

Rock

Test Property

Sample preparation

Description of Test

The dimensional, shape and surface tolerances of rock core specimens are all important when measuring intact rock strength. Rock cores are cut with a wet saw, then surface ground with special equipment to the tolerances set forth in this standard. Several parameters are measured and compared to the tolerances: straightness, flatness, parallelism & perpendicularity.

Number of Test Specimens

1

Test Specimen Size

Right circular cylinder, with diameter of at least 1 7/8 in and a length to diameter ratio of 2 to 2.5:1

Keywords

Diameter, dimensions, rock specimen preparation, surface analysis, tolerances.
