Standard Test Method for Evaluation of Durability of Rock for Erosion Control Under Freezing and Thawing Conditions

Test Method Title

Standard Test Method for Evaluation of Durability of Rock for Erosion Control Under Freezing and Thawing Conditions

Reference Number

ASTM D5312

Material

Rock

Test Property

Percent Loss

Description of Test

The durability of rock for erosion control is determined by exposing slabs to freezing and thawing cycles similar to natural weather conditions. Rock slabs are prepared in accordance with ASTM D5121 then subjected to up to 55 cycles of freezing and thawing. The test is appropriate for breakwater stone, armor stone, riprap and gabion sized rock materials. Caution: the size of the cut rock slab specimens may eliminate some of the internal defects present in the rock structure and the test specimens may not be representative of the quality of the larger rock samples used in construction.

Number of Test Specimens

5 per lithologic unit

Test Specimen Size

No smaller than 5 in x 5 in and 2.5 in thick.
